On Friday, Mar 11, an earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Japan, bringing down towns and triggering a 30-foot tsunami in what is recorded as the worst earthquake in Japan’s history. While the official death toll currently stands at 1,700, more than 10,000 people are lost, and feared dead. Scores of people have been displaced, families split and homes flattened as raging waves washed over the coast and fires ravage some areas. Rescuers still hear the cries of victims buried under rubble.

Affected parts of Japan have come to a standstill with public transportation, electricity cables and telephone lines destroyed. Water supply has also been cut off, sparking major health concerns. Devastating aerial photos show ships, containers and even planes strewn like toys, and some towns are completely submerged underwater.
